Chill Out! The Cure to Becoming More Productive
WARNING: There is an epidemic affecting employees everywhere. Are you showing any of these signs or symptoms?
- Less than six hours of sleep a night
- High levels of stress
- Choosing on-the-go meals instead of healthier alternatives
- Noticeable absences of laughter and general happiness
- A lack of productivity
- Loss of motivation while working, otherwise known as burnout
You’re experiencing a significant lack of relaxation.
1) Get some sleep
Adults should get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night in order to wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed. Regularly receiving less than six hours of sleep could have a number of health repercussions, such as an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and a significant decline in cognitive functioning. On top of that, a study of 400 employees showed that receiving too little sleep is one of the best predictors of workplace burnout.
2) Devote time to a hobby
Do you love getting lost in books? Do you know how to play a musical instrument? Maybe you like shooting hoops in your free time? Whatever your passion may be, it is important to make time for it in your daily life! Not only will this significantly reduce your stress levels, but studies show that those who engage in a hobby actually perform up to 30 percent better in the workplace.
3) Get moving
Whether it’s as short as ten minutes or as long as a half-hour, taking a quick walk every day can work wonders for your physical and emotional health. Not only will this boost your mood and reduce stress levels, but studies also show that walking can boost your creative thinking by about 60 percent compared your normal levels when sitting or standing still.
4) Laughter, the secret weapon
A little bit of laughter goes a long way. A study from the Loma Linda School of Medicine showed that laughter reduces levels of the pesky stress hormones cortisol, DOPAC and epinephrine. Along with that, laughter increases blood flow and boosts your immune system, which raises both your physical and emotional health. Lowering your stress levels helps to boost productivity too.
Being ambitious doesn’t have to come at the expense of your well-being. You can be both successful and healthy! Regularly relaxing and unwinding will not only help to maintain your overall health, but it’s also proven to instantly boost productivity levels.
So what are you waiting for? Chill out already!
