Staffing Employment Trends – July 2012

The total unemployment rate changed little in the month of June, remaining at 8.2% as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Total employment was up slightly for the month, adding 80,000 new jobs with 11,000 of those in the manufacturing industry. Professional business services, healthcare and wholesale trade also continued to add new jobs in June.

According to the American Staffing Association (ASA), staffing employment was up 6.8% in June 2012 from the year prior. The ASA Staffing Index also reports that temporary and contract employment has grown 24.8% since the beginning of 2012. The staffing industry added more than 25,000 jobs this month, according to seasonally adjusted employment data also released by the BLS.

In their monthly SI Report webinar, Staffing Industry Analysts tracked the top growing occupations, industries and metropolitan areas in the last 12 months. Transportation & Material Moving, Business & Financial Operations and Healthcare Practitioners ranked among the top five occupations, while Transportation & Warehousing, Wholesale Trade and Agriculture ranked among the top five industries. Somewhat surprisingly, Detroit ranked among the top five growing metropolitan areas.
