Because of the current administration's crack down on employers that misclassify workers, that is changing. The current administration estimates that misclassification of employees as independent contractors could cost the U.S. Treasury Department over $7 billion in lost payroll tax revenue between 2010-2020. In an effort to capture this lost revenue, the IRS is conducting random audits of 6,000 businesses over the next three years to determine if those businesses are correctly classifying employees and is working to tighten the laws that govern employee classification and stiffen the penalties for employers that misclassify employees. This increased scrutiny has brought the management of independent contractors to the top of the priority list for many staffing buyers and has provided the leverage necessary to drive better compliance.
